"Dances with the Daffodils"

W11May2018
On a visit to the New York Botanical Garden a couple weeks ago, I managed to hit the peak of daffodil bloom. The garden has one of the biggest collections of daffodils in the country. They are tucked in borders, line walkways narrow and wide, and most impressively form an explosive sea of white and yellow on Daffodil Hill.
The garden commemorated the 125th anniversary of its founding in 2016. Starting in 2015 as an ongoing effort, a million daffodils are being planted on Daffodil Hill. During my visit, a staff member was at work on what is known as the Daffodil Initiative. The bulbs are planted by garden horticulturists, garden members, community groups, school students, and even specialized equipment brought in from Holland.
I’ve always admired the famous poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. It inspires me in my own wanderings, thinking of what I see, and how I see it. It was easy to imagine floating with the clouds on this sunny April day in NY, admiring this pale palette of beauty. Somewhere in those clouds Wordsworth was looking down on this beautiful crowd of flowers, and now he “dances with the daffodils”.
