Gilded rock

I walked up and down this small stream searching for the right balance of light and shadow to capture an ephemeral effect where the green of the forest and the gold of the setting sun were reflected in the water and on a slick stone in the middle of the flow on either side. I found this rock and what began as a plain glistening black grew to a vivid green reflection and then slowly turned to gold as I waited for the stream and stone to be completely submerged in tree shadows. I played with a variety of shutter speeds since I had a small tripod, but ended up choosing this one since it caught some of the motion and sparkle of the waves. The white of a small eddy in the background defined the rock etched with gold, and the slower flow of the foreground water caught golden highlights. Within minutes of taking this shot the color faded.
