This means that the salary can be deferred at 100% (exception: overtime for more than 12 hours worked per day, later until the film meets certain distribution criteria (see below). 3. SAG New Media Council – The special agreement “New Media” (w/ budgets over 50K) is now divided into categories A – D. A-C categories apply only to episodic content published on New Media platforms; Non-episodic projects would instead be covered by the SPA, UPA or MPA agreement, depending on the size of the budget. Category D New Media applies to both episodic and non-episodic content published on New Media platforms. Although the SAG Ultra Low Budget Agreement has three low-budget options, it only applies to films (and short films) that have $250,000 or less. Although there is no weekly SAG scale for ultra-low budget projects, SAG`s newscast rate is $125. It also requires a first theatrical publication. The last SAG/AFTRA tariffs began on July 1, 2019 and will remain in effect until June 30, 2020. The more you broadcast a spot, the more you have to pay. The first SAG exchange rates are as follows: all EU members are covered for all projects that employ SAG-AFTRA members under the SAG-AFTRA basic agreement and the SAG-AFTRA television agreement. However, there are subsequent classifications of projects that require additional contracts. When signing these contracts, the signatory also signs the default basic agreement and remains subject to the conditions and guidelines set out in this document.
The SAG Modified Low Budget Agreement applies to films with budgets ranging from $250,000 to $700,000. The daily sag price is $335 and the weekly SAG rate is $1166. Non-union actors are allowed, while substantive actors are not covered. For non-union actors on The Deadline, we have developed a contract similar to the SAG short film contract, but without the deferred payment. Of course, all of this is negotiable. SAG-AFTRA (“Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists”) is a trade union Representing more than 160,000 film and television artists, radio actors, video games, advertisers (on radio and television), news anchors, singers and recording artists (both royalty artists and background singers), performers in commercials and actors working as stuntmen and specialized acts. It is dedicated to protecting the interests of its members and improving wages, working hours and working conditions, and it does so through a series of contractual agreements (some of which are grouped above) applicable when one of its members participates in a production. Overtime caused by travel time is calculated at a rate of 1.5x, time and half. Amazon, Instagram, YouTube – these are just some of the targets the Screen Actors Guild has classified as “new media.” Whether you`ve made a movie or a series, both are covered by this agreement as long as your budget is between $50,000 and $1,000,000.
It is useful to have all this information on how much to pay an actor, but there are other details to take into account. SAG has a separate schedule for each player, depending on the amount and how you pay them. Why is this important, you might ask? It is important because items such as overtime, 6th and 7th day and vacation pay can vary depending on the schedule. A general rule is that the less you pay on the scale, the more the performer can earn with these items: OT, 6th and 7th day of salary, etc. However, the more you pay an actor above the scale, it means more caps for these items. If you`re looking for a SAG short film contract, this is probably the right place to start.
